The next day we had a lecture on the foods that the early fur traders used to eat. To keep up their strength they packed in 6000 calories a day. I was happy because we got to taste examples like a really yummy beef jerky, some smoked Atlantic Char, and various berries and jams and some hard bread and tea. I thoroughly enjoyed the jerky and the smoked fish. Veta would not try them.
Then we learned how to build an igloo. . It was really fun even though it was freezing. Everyone took part in cutting the snow blocks from the snow with saws and then we learned how to angle and stack the snow blocks to make the igloo. To secure the blocks, you just had to tap them twice and they magically stayed in place. Once all the blocks were in place, we had to do some chinking, which is just filling any openings with snow. Do you remember chinking from social studies????
There was an old one that was built the day before so a few of us climbed in. I had to wiggle through the tiny door like Pooh Bear trying to get into the honey pot. Thank god my fat ass was able to fit through the tiny hole.
Our final night was glorious. We had a great dinner of delicious beef stew and couscous and Caribou cocktails (as well as wine and beer). Then the Lights started dancing again. I braved the 50 below temperatures in my Vida Fitness T-shirt. My gym has a contest that you can win a year’s membership if you photograph yourself while wearing their t-shirt in an interesting location and of course win for having the best photo – so I figured the Northern Lights would win….more on that one later.
The Lights were even more glorious than the light before. We even packed into the van and went back to our igloo for more photos. What a fun night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
