Last Day – Farewell Cambodia
2October 6, 2014 by vickimrichardson
My final day was spent taking more photos of the white building and street scenes, eating, and going to the movies at a chain called Flicks.
One heeeheeelarious thing that happened today on the way to the theatre was the tuk-tuk that I was in ran out of gas a few meters shy of the gas station. We were on a bit of an incline so I had to jump out as the stalled contraption started rolling backwards and help push it to the gas station. The driver kept apologizing and telling me not to help, but there was no way he could push the thing by himself and steer. I just ignored him and kept pushing saying over and over it was OK. Then another man helped push and we rolled it to a tank. He put the equivalent of $1.50 in his tuk-tuk (which is basically a motorcycle with a large covered wagon on three wheels attached to the back of the bike. I found the whole thing quite amusing.
The theatre, called Flicks, is this really cool theatre/backpacker hostel/rooftop tiki bar. There are a total 3 of these Flicks theatres throughout the city. The entrance fee is $3.50 which admits you to any of the movies all day at that theatre and a free beer in the rooftop bar. They sell popcorn freshly popped and all sorts of burgers, pizza, fish & chips, you name it. They deliver the food to you while you are watching the movie. The theatre consists of futon day beds and rattan sofas with cushions. They ask you to remove your shoes before entering the theatre. I kept mine in my backpack – don’t trust the foreign backpackers with my Reebok Zig Nanos (which are now extinct and a true treasure hunt to find online – they have flexible soles and are great for dance/exercise classes). I am seeing a double feature: Frank (a weird independent film about an experimental band with Michael Fassbinder as the lead wearing a giant costume head) and the The Killing Fields. A perfect way to spend a rainy evening and calmly say good-bye to this beautiful country with such a turbulent past. Here’s to a brighter future in Cambodia – these lovely people deserve it! Between this visit and Siam Reap last March, this is fast becoming a favorite spot of mine to visit.

A wonderful tale. Thank you Vicki!
Glad you had a good time. You must show me that part of the world!
